Your Car and your Body go Vroooom

If you are a chiropractic patient, you may have heard this analogy. If you are not a chiropractic patient, chances are you don't look at health care in this same fashion. Either way, it's a wonderful reminder of how health is supposed to work and what it is we should all be focusing on from day to day.

Our cars (and our motorcycles, boats, etc.) are highly relied on pieces of equipment. They transport us, move things for us, employ us, are employed by us and generally make a lot of things happen. Without them, life would not end, but it would definitely change it's pace.

For this reason, when cars talk to us, we listen. If the engine light goes on, to the mechanic we go. If the breaks squeak, the wipers jump, the steering veers or the bumps get to be too bumpy we know we need help. If we ignore this warning, we can be assured that trouble in the form of time and money is awaiting us.

Fortunately, with such a big reliance on vehicles, we have started to look at things in a better light. How about a tune-up before that engine light comes on? How about an oil change every 6 months or 5,000 km? Isn't that considered proper maintenance? Being proactive and preventing mechanical or other problems before they occur saves us time and money in the long run. At the extreme, just think if we waited until the gas tank ran out before we filled it back up again. That may not be the most convenient way to drive seeing as chances are you'll run out of gas no where near a gas station.

As absurd as this last point sounds, it is similar to how we often drive our bodies. Engine lights are flashing, tanks are running low, parts are broken or banging and the body is just taking a beating. But it keeps on moving along just like our favorite reliable car of the past. Until of course that day that we're stuck in the "middle of no where" and not sure why are bodies had to fail us at that particular time. There's a popular saying I use in my community outreach and information programs when I do presentations, and it goes like this:
  • Our bodies are like Rolls Royces. They're very elaborate machines that are wonderful at what they do, look incredible, and perform like no other machine in the world.
  • We drive our bodies like Ferraris. We push hard all day, sometimes in the "red-line", and expect our bodies to give 100% whenever we need it. A high performance machine.
  • We only want to pay for the budget, economy class car. I won't mention any names, but sometimes we pay for our bodies like a low-end vehicle while driving it like a super sports car. If you want to treat yourself like the incredible machine you are, it's time you paid the price!
Now we all have different ideas of what kinds of cars we like to drive. We also all have different ideas of what we want our health to be like and what we think is good health. Regardless, just like a car is a car when it comes to tune-ups and gasoline, our bodies also do not vary very much when it comes to proper maintenance and care.

So, to save you time, money and heartache keep a regular schedule when it comes to taking care of yourself. The time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining. Don't wait for the downpour to find out you're going to get soaked. Find a chiropractor, a good book, a mentor or something or someone who can help you stay in line. That way you can keep your machine (body) cruising down the highway of life with only sunny skies on the horizon.
