Little Humans

Children, from infants to adolescents, are often looked at as "little humans". Although not yet adults, their bodies are made of the same parts, systems and universal intelligence that control our bodies every day of our lives. The difference between the young and the not so young is the level of functions of the body and the purpose the body's work at different parts in the course of life.

Interestingly, because the same body is present at all ages it makes it susceptible to similar problems throughout life. Some of these problems are specific or more common at a certain stage of development while others are possible at any age for many reasons. The cause of these problems and the body's solution to these problems remains constant because the parts, systems and universal intelligence do not change. Of course, there are exceptions, but for the most part our bodies are as similar as they are unique regardless of age.

Recently, there has been some question about the usefulness and appropriateness of chiropractic care during the early years. The above logic creates a foundation for the relevance of chiropractic care from day one to 150 years of age. Using the anatomical and physiological reasons listed above as a starting point, society should be aware that there is good reason for many different health care interventions and wellness care approaches at an early age.
    Especially, people should realize that:
  • Parents are often concerned about the safety of chiropractic care for infants and children. What parents need to know is that younger people, including infants, require less care to correct problems. They are treated with less force because of their size and respond better to care because of the lack of built-up bad habits, decreased resistance to care and limited possible degeneration of structures or systems as would be found in the older adult forms of the body.
  • The research behind the treatment of conditions such as colic, recurring ear infections and irritability in infants and bed wetting, growing pains, scoliosis and some respiratory conditions in children is ongoing and is providing favourable results in the use of chiropractic intervention.
  • Potential problems in infants can occur due to the birth process itself where damage to delicate structures is secondary to entering a New World. From this point on, the challenge of sitting up, crawling, walking, climbing, falling and playing can cause many conditions, especially if left uncorrected.
A Doctor of Chiropractic has received over 7 years of university level education that allows them to treat family members from the day of birth onward. Treatments to children are proportionately precise and gentle, as they should be. In a world that is as demanding on our youth as it is, it seems logical to give our children as much of an advantage as possible. A chiropractic consultation and examination is as important as a regular medical check-up and is a good start to educating them on health care choices. Don't forget little humans are people just like you and me.
